Former Broadway baby Janene Lovullo is a singer you should know, and her new, self-produced debut CD makes an auspicious calling card. Prophetically titled This Moment, Lovullo’s gorgeous soprano comes across as capable of singing almost any genre with power and beauty. With musical direction by the talented Christopher Marlowe, Lovullo covers everything from Sondheim to Bucchino to Menotti with exquisite style.

The scope of this CD is amazing—from the most intimate of musical conversations to grand sweeping anthems. The team of Janene Lovullo and Christopher Marlowe creates the kind of musical experience that transcends language, culture, and genre. This is the kind of break-out talent that fills stadiums, and yet is so investigated that it can withstand the scrutiny of the most intimate cabaret or boite. And the voice itself — well, it’s simply the voice of an angel! If you loved the arrangements Marlowe created for the great Nancy LaMott, you will celebrate the artistic maturity he finds with Janene. The two of them take wing!
Album available for purchase on CD Baby, Amazon, and Apple Music.

When I first heard Janene Lovullo at Sterling’s Upstairs at Vitello’s in January of 2010, I was captivated by her beautifully fragile soprano voice and how well she was able to convey the delicacy of the lyrics of each song to a large audience. I also remember telling her how she needed to record, as, unlike many singers, hers is a voice that is ideally suited to record. Well, she released the lovely album This Moment in 2012…and now, just released as of February 2013, comes her second album Broadway, Intimate. As I listened, I can truthfully say that I haven’t been this excited about a singer since Joan Ryan’s “Shall We Dance?” several years ago. Unusually different arrangements and an up close, personal interpretation that sends the already popular tune soaring to brand new heights….such are the accomplishments of Janene Lovullo.

Think that you know the American Broadway Songbook? Think again. Janene Lovullo’s whimsical and brilliantly executed BROADWAY, INTIMATE takes the listener on a smooth and relaxing journey down that Great White Way, while reintroducing you to the more intimate side of some of Broadway’s most well known (and even a few lesser known) tunes. As a performer and long time member of the Musical Theatre world, I was blown away by the brilliant reinventions and beautiful musicality of musical director, Christopher Marlowe’s arrangements. His interpretation and execution of some of these tunes are nothing short of genius, fresh, and incredibly ambitious. The crown jewel of this album, however, is the stunning vocal performance of Broadway veteran, Janene Lovullo. Her flawless technique and seamless range allow the listener to float along with her on this musical ride through roles she’s played, roles you wish she’d played, and tunes you’ll never be able to hear any other way ever again. Her voice transitions effortlessly from the cool Bernstein jazz of West Side Story to the Rogers & Hammerstein classics of Carousel. This album is a must have for not just the avid musical theatre fan that wil be blown away by these cool and intimate renditions of some of their favorite songs, but also for the listener that appreciates the flawless voice of a true Broadway leading lady.

Simply lovely, true, pure and intimate, indeed! Miss Lovullo does it divinely once again with this recording and brings a buttery smooth tone with every note she offers up to us. Her take on Anything Goes made me stop and here the words to this classic in a way I never thought possible…a previously raucous song turned sweet, heartfelt and close to her chest, with every note delivered precisely and with the perfect genuine emotion of authenticity, love and passion. Job well done, Miss Lovullo! You have captured me with your talent and this newest recording. Now, a fan of yours for life!

Janene Lovullo has one of those voices you’ll always remember. She has two fabulous CD’s available….THIS MOMENT and BROADWAY INTIMATE. Her voice has the emotional intensity that will take your breath away. Janene pours her heart and soul in songs by Rachmaninoff, Michel Legrand, Alan and Marilyn Bergman and a swing jazz thing called “Save your Bones for Henry Jones/Frim Fram Sauce…(my favorite). No matter what she sings, Janene’s voice is a voice like no other!
